In the systems biology literature, the most commonly discussed systems are networks of genes or proteins. Sometimes these are very large systems: the set of all genes in an organism and the spatiotemporal control of these genes (e.g., [ 1 – 3 ]). But there is no fixed scale at which systems biology operates.
filexlib. Today, systems biology is a well-established area of research activity which is conducted in an interdisciplinary manner because investigations depend on the knowledge of scientists from various scientific fields including mathematics, bioinformatics, computer science, biostatistics, biology, medicine, physics, and engineering [ 1, 8, 11, 23 ].
However, unless the systems biology is carried out correctly, it might not deliver an understanding of cell function that is based on molecular interactions. Therefore, in this review, we outline the challenges faced by systems biology and discuss two approaches that are helping to address such challenges: top-down and bottom-up systems biology.

The techniques described in this book encompass a wide range of mechanisms, from molecular behavior to population dynamics, and the inclusion of recent developments in the literature together with first-hand results make it an ideal reference for both new students and experienced researchers in the field of systems biology and applied mathematics.
Hindawi Current Opinion in Systems Biology is a new review journal that aims to provide specialists with a unique and educational platform to keep up-to-date with the expanding volume of information published in the field of Systems Biology. It publishes polished, concise and timely reviews and opinion articles. In addition to describing recent trends, the authors are encouraged to give their
Systems biology provides a framework for assembling models of biological systems from systematic measurements. Since the field was first introduced a decade ago, considerable progress has been made in technologies for global cell measurement and in computational analyses of these data to map and model cell function.
Systems biology is the study of the behavior of complex biological organization and processes in terms of the molecular constituents (Marc W. Kirschner, Cell, Vol 121, 503‐504, 2005. Department of Systems Biology, Harvard Medical School). Systems biology can be described as “Integrative Biology” with the
This textbook has been conceptualized to provide a detailed description of the various aspects of Systems and Synthetic Biology, keeping the requirements of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in mind. Also, it is hoped that this book will mentor young scientists who are willing to contribute to this area but do not know from where to begin.

Review Systems biology is based on the idea that engineered and evolved systems share common principles. Here, Alon (Weizmann Inst. of Science, Rehovot) elucidates three of the major principles… This book is a compendium of many different experiments. Together, they show that biological systems do obey these design principles. -P.

Systems biology is best understood as consisting of two streams. One, which we shall call ‘pragmatic systems biology’, emphasizes large-scale molecular interactions; the other, which we shall refer to as ‘systems-theoretic biology’, emphasizes system principles. Both are committed to mathematical modelling, and both lack a clear account
